Creatures of the Good - Bad - and Unknown
The BOX JELLYFISH
'Most Venomous Sea Creature'

Here it is! The Sea Creature or any other, be it on land or sea, that' the Most Venomous Creature on Earth Title goes to this one, and I had a most unexpected experience with one! This is actually an Excerpt chapter in my recent eBook 'Creatures of the Good, Bad and Unknown'.
Enjoy, it's a true story..."Captain Bob" (R. W. Schott)

ABOUT THE 'Invisible' BOX JELLYFISH AND MY FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE

This is the Box Jellyfish (Carukia barnesi) sometimes referred to as Sea Wasp (Australian species mainly),This one is extremely fast, and not to be, but often is, confused with the common slow moving Moon Jellyfish, so don’t say well it might have been, NO Sherlock it wasn’t as they're actually fairly easy to identify. Keep reading to see my story and see, it's about the 'Big One that got away - and that was Me!

- Fast, Deadly and Transparent -
box jellyfish ture story from ebook

If Hollywood was going to make a Movie about this creature, the name would probably be - ‘2 MINUTES TO LIVE”
Because that’s just about what you’ve got if you get stung by this thing.

Box jellyfish can actually swim for up to a maximum of four knots + (aprox. 4.6 mph). As for their method of attack, box jellyfish don't attack straight at you, their attack is more angled as they are covered on all sides by tentacles, up to a maximum of 15. These tentacles are loaded with powerful venom, in which the toxins attack the heart, nervous system, and skin cells when injected into a human body. According to the findings of the U.S. National Science Foundation 20 to 40 people die of box jellyfish sting each year in Philippine alone. Box jellyfish are very delicate creatures. Even a tiny little fish can tear through its body. They are aggressive hunters as opposed to other jellyfish that float. Thus, they need to develop a powerful venom that will kill their prey in an instant, before it causes any injury to them Tropical-dwelling box jellyfish have a cube-shaped body, and four different types of special-purpose eyes: They use angles protecting their body as their tentacles are the key, they graze you and/or whip or wrap their tentacles around areas of their prey. When triggered, the pressure in the nematocysts builds up to 2000 lbs. per square inch (That[s superhuman and animal pressure) causing a microscopic lance to be ejected administering the jelly venom.

Box jellyfish, jave aprox. 50 described species with tentacles covered in tiny biological booby traps known as cnidocysts. Each cnidocyst contains a tiny dart and a load of poison that cause “the most explosive envenomation process that is presently known to humans,” according to The Medical Journal of Australia. While mainly in warm coastal areas and nothing dictates their desired destination preferences. As there are numerous species that do not always follow a specific route in their travels from frequent to less frequent locations the fact is that more poisonous types can appear at any time and the Box Jellyfish, being the most venomous creatures on earth, land or sea.

My Personal ‘Too Close for Comfort’ Encounter

This happened off the Coast of Florida in the Keys many years ago, not a regular hangout for this creature but they gravitate towards warm coastal areas between August and April, which is exactly when my story began. One repetitive note here of importance, the Box Jellyfish, again, don't confuse it with the Moon Jellyfish, they’re entirely two different creatures. As stated the Box Jellyfish is by far the fastest of all the jellyfish species frequently swimming at angles and there’s no other jellyfish close to it’s speed, other jellyfish are all basically slow moving creatures. This is also an important part of my story I’ll share here.

On this one particular sunny warm day I decided to go snorkeling off the Key’s. While I am a registered Scuba Diver, I just used a mask and snorkel and of course swim fins on this day. This happened when I was swimming about 4 feet just under the surface about 50 feet from shore. Keep in mind a couple facts here, the water off the coast is crystal clear, you can see the bottom over 40 feet down from the surface. Just off shore for about 100 yards the water depth was about 10 feet or so, you have to go out a ways before it starts to slope off down towards 40-70 feet. I was swimming slow and could hold my breath comfortably for about 1 minute, but swimming within 4 feet of the surface with a snorkel that was no problem. Normally it gets harder to hold your breath the deeper you go but in this depth it was very easy to go a minute, I had trained myself to do that over time. I was swimming very slow, and was using my arms a bit ahead of me when all of a sudden up from the bottom the transparent creature darted and I mean ‘darted’ up at a 45 degree angle about 1 ½ feet directly in my path in front of me. Now here’s the main part, the angle in which this creature darted was slightly away from me and in one split micro second I recognized what was just in front of me, a Box Jellyfish. The angle is important as that’s how they will normally sting, they’ll dart up and away at an angle from their target protecting their delicate body but leaving their long venomous tentacles angling backwards towards the oncoming target. One reason for this is that they can’t withstand a head on attack as their body is too delicate. Their tentacles are their strong suit. I immediately pulled me arm back, stopped on a ‘dime’ (which I learned how to do underwater, just a trick you do with your large fins, and pulled myself backwards, with them. Just missing the tentacles. While this area was known for occasional Portugese Man of War activity, but usually at various times of the year, they’re very easy to spot and usually travel in groups, they’re slow as mollasses and they’re pinkish color is a tell tale give-a-way as to what they are. While they’re nothing to mess with and are venomous too, they don’t compare to the Box Jellyfish, no poisonous spider, snake or other creature can compare to it. As far as easily identifying it so quickly, it’s not that hard as the Box Jellyfish has a few different tell tale fool proof visualizations associated with it. One is it’s boxy transparent shape, the other it’s long tentacles in a group of about 12-15, and that’s where the venom is located, but the other is a most specific 100% tell tale method of identifying it quickly, that’s it’s speed. It darted up so fast I knew immediately what it was, the shape and tentacles just verified it all. I just pulled my arm back in time, as I could see the tentacles graze closely in front of me and I wasn’t wearing a wet suit, that was just too close. As a wet suit, I have done some Ice Diving and always used a 1 / 4 inch neoprene suit, that may have protected me, 'some', but it’s hard to tell and I don't have a lot of interest in testing that one out on this creature to find out. I don’t have to tell you that that was all the snorkeling I did for that day, that week and in that area.

Later I asked around and found out that the Box Jellyfish had been seen on occasion in this area and usual advice was ‘just watch out for them!’ What?? Sure, watch out for them, how quiz kid?? They’re almost invisible, blend into the coral and sea weed, move like lightening underwater and it’s the one creature or sub surface element you can’t see from the surface because of it’s transparent body. So watch out for it?? Pleeease! - if you see it in time!
...”this happened just like I said it did’ – there was no mistaking the Box Jellyfish as I said it was – and it did what I said it did and if I never run into this thing again, it’ll be Too Soon!”
